Dear reader,
As the warmth melts the ice, the heat thaws the snow, and the sun rekindles the spirit of nature’s liveliness once more, it can be tempting to dismiss the tender kindness of the changing seasons in favor of its practical utility. Though it is true that the warm weather means less heavy clothing and more Vitamin D, to fall victim to treating the incredible kindness of nature without proper appreciation would be a tragic miscarriage of its potential.
The ever-changing course of life is not merely a means to an end. It is an end in and of itself—one that we seldom appreciate enough. Spring is awe-inspiring not only because of how it affects us humans, but also because of the warmth of the sun shining upon the land, the timid courage of the flowers peeking through the snow, and the joy of the squirrels and rabbits dashing to and fro in the early dawn.
As you contemplate the different characteristics of life explored throughout Issue 52, ranging from its danger to its strength and from its uncertainty to its hopefulness, I hope that you take a moment to pause, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and cherish the miracle of being alive. Because life is ruthless, tragic, and cruel. But it is also incredibly beautiful.
